Cathy Sloss Jones’ mission has historically been about repurposing existing buildings and infrastructure to help draw people back into Birmingham’s downtown. She is one of Alabama’s most dedicated, talented urban planners and developers. Viewed as a thought leader within real estate development circles, Cathy has been instrumental in shaping Birmingham’s City Center, through the development of Pepper Place, the Pepper Place Farmers Market, Park Place and as a leader in Alabama’s chapter of the Urban Land Institute (ULI Alabama). She has also impacted the city though her community involvement, including advocating for walkable, healthy and equitable neighborhoods, supporting the Historic Tax Credit, championing the Lakeshore Foundation and creating the Art Folk Gallery.

Nearly 20 years ago, Cathy claimed a vacant lot adjacent to the old Dr. Pepper Bottling Company as home for a farmer’s market. Now, the Market at Pepper Place, has more than 100 tents and 10,000 visitors every Saturday morning. Cathy also led the redevelopment of surrounding buildings to help create the Pepper Place District, a creative community of businesses, retailers, and restaurants.

A driving force behind Park Place, Birmingham’s first HOPE VI neighborhood, she helped transform 6-blocks of obsolete public housing into a city jewel, expanding the project from the original site into a 12-block mixed-use, mixed-income community. Cathy, working with an Atlanta partner and the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District, she served as the developer creating a model for mixed-income choice housing.

Cathy serves as the first chairman of the Urban Land Institute, Alabama chapter (ULI-Alabama), which brings together real estate professionals to collaborate on recommending best land use practices. ULI-Alabama is inspiring cities across the state by creating a vision of growth. Cathy understands the importance of walkability and green space and is personally involved and supportive of projects like the Rotary Trail, Jones Valley Trail, Red Rocks Trail System, Complete Street pop-ups and Sloss Furnaces.
