Joan Witherspoon-Norris is the epitome of a servant leader. She’s at the helm of the YWCA’s Social Justice Department. Since 2009, Joan has been charged with leading the team responsible for making the YWCA mission come to life in the areas of Social Justice Youth Programming, AmeriCorps and Advocacy. Her commitment to that work led her to create the YWCA’s award-winning AmeriCorps program.
In 2011, Joan forged a relationship with the National Conference of Community and Justice to bring Anytown Alabama social justice leadership camp to the YWCA. In addition, Joan’s tireless efforts in advocacy, particularly predatory lending, ignited change in legislation to reduce pay day lending loans from their absorbent rate of 456%. That rate often cripples the women and families the YWCA serves so Joan works HARD every year to advocate, garner public and political support and bring about change.
